Kayak Equipment Information for Beginners Videos

Beginning Guide to Basic Kayaking Equipment

There is not much gear needed for starting kayaking. A paddle and kayak, life vest, helmet and spray skirt are the recommended beginner's gear.

Kayaks for surfing and doing stunts are normally referred to playboats. Rocky River Kayaks are normally referred to creek boats. Traditional river kayaks are for a quick ride and stability. Usually kayaking beginners start with a traditional river kayak.

One kayak does not fit all. The shape and size of kayaks is decided by the paddler's height, weight, and the type of area the kayak will be used in. Kayak dealers almost always offer demo or demonstration kayaks available for testing. This gives kayakers an opportunity to try before they buy.

Used kayaks cost a lot less than new. Fine used kayaks can almost always be listed in the classifieds of your newspaper, online auctions and other similar venues.

Locating the correct paddle requires taking the weight, length, material and shape of the blade into consideration. Along with the person's, torso shape and paddling style. Tall users, those with long bodies and people who prefer a comfortable ride will need to have longer paddles. Shorter people, or those with small torsos and people who like to paddle quickly and get the job over with will benefit from shorter paddles.

Paddles for kayaking are built of wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber and shafts made of aluminum with plastic shafts. The shaft made of aluminum paddles are the best choice for beginners. Usually kayakers are already into other water hobbies and own a life jacket (commonly known as a personal flotation device). They can be purchased in almost all stores, sporting goods stores and boating equipment stores in addition to online stores and auctions.

Life vests, also known as personal flotation devices (PFD) are required by law. Choose a PFD required for the style of kayaking you are going to do. Type III PFD's are normally the most comfortable for paddling. Kayaking head gear should be decent quality and fit comfortably. Just like other sporting equipment, helmets have evolved and now are as much about fashion as function. Click Here for Great Canoes
